Accent on Antique Phonographs and the Chicago Worlds Fair
The guest speaker at the September 10th, 2016 "Accent on Antique Phonographs" will be John Hauger. He will combine two of his interests of antique phonographs and the history of The Chicago World's Columbian Exposition of 1893.
John collects antique phonographs and records. Today’s program is based on history and uses some of the records and machines from his collection to help tell the story. John often says “It would be so great if these machines and records could tell their stories.”
John is a member of the Antique Phonograph Society and gives presentations throughout the Midwest. He hails from Spring Arbor, Michigan.
The Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, marking the 400th anniversary of Columbus landing in the New World, was a landmark event in United States History. Never before had this nation undertaken so ambitious a task as a world’s fair on this scale. The numbers give us some perspective: The Exposition covered more than 600 acres; a work force of 40,000 worked a year and a half, 24x7 for 10 cents a day; almost 200 new buildings were constructed; one, the Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building, was the largest building in the world covering 44 acres; buildings from 44 states and 4 territories, and from 46 countries, their products and their cultures were on display. Dubbed “The White City”, the Fair drew more than 27,000,000 people from all over the world. Electricity, especially the electric light was among chief technologies at the Fair. George Westinghouse and Thomas Edison vied for preeminence. Please join us and learn more about a momentous event in Chicago’s history.
The presentation will be given on Saturday, September 10th at 1:30 at the Lake County Fairgrounds building. Enjoy a day at the Grayslake Antique Market and discover antique phonographs and the history of the Chicago World's Fair of 1893.
