Phonograph is typically the broadest term to cover cylinder machines and disc machines of just about any variety. Gramophone is a term typically referring to Emile Berliner's disc machine, but most collectors will still mostly use “phonograph” instead. Victrola is a Victor brand name for internal-horn disc machines, and is still covered by the term “phonograph.”

Many do. Early wax cylinders are fragile and mold damage is permanent, while later celluloid cylinders hold up better. Always match the record format to a machine set up for it — especially “2m” vs “4m”. 2-minute cylinders require a 2m reproducer and gearing, while 4-minute cylinders require a 4m reproducer and gearing. Using the wrong type will certainly not sound good, and may damage the record.

Look for the decal on the case and any plate on the bedplate or motorboard, note whether it plays cylinders or discs, and photograph every number and marking before cleaning anything.

Value depends on maker, model, completeness, originality, mechanical condition, and current demand. WIMAPS does not appraise machines, but members can help you describe accurately what you have.

Collectors generally prefer original finish and decals, with work limited to mechanical servicing and reversible repairs. Refinishing and repainting usually reduce collector interest.

Members trade parts at meeting swap and sells, and specialist suppliers sell reproduction needles, gaskets, belts, and springs. You can also find a lot by searching on eBay. (Note: Steel needles are meant to be changed after each record side.)
